Flashback to young minds in action at Aerospace Bristol on Museum Takeover Day

In November 2024, Little Stokes Primary School students ‘took over’ Aerospace Bristol and stepped into key roles. Expertly guided by museum volunteers, Ian Smith and Maggie Aherne, students explored exhibits, researched historical artefacts and developed their very own tour.

One of the highlights of the visit, was a behind-the-scenes archive visit with the museum’s Head of Collections, Learning and Interpretation, Amy Seadon, where students examined WWII artefacts, including a gunner’s personal belongings.

Amy said: "Watching the children take on our roles and share their excitement for Bristol's rich aerospace heritage was incredibly impactful. Their curiosity and enthusiasm showed us just how powerful hands-on learning can be, and it was a privilege to see them connect without work in such a meaningful way."

One lucky museum visitor was thrilled by the children’s knowledgeable tour, demonstrating the event’s education impact. The day ended with the students imagining themselves as a part of the museum’s marketing team and writing a blog post reflecting their favourite exhibit.

This immersive experience provided young minds with unique insights into several aspects of a museum. Aerospace Bristol is looking forward to welcoming more students for another takover next year.

The students also took a moment to sit down and draw whatever inspired them from their visit and important job roles. The museum thought it would be a great idea to share some of the fantastic artwork they produced.
